Major Mitchell is requested to find the most appropriate route for the Great North Road to descend into the Wollombi Valley. While Mitchell is surveying the ridges to the north of Watagan Creek, local Aboriginal people accompany and share their knowledge of native placenames with him: “I ascended the same hill…accompanied by a native and his gin and two boys and found the range I was on yesterday.
